Standard Cyborg (YC W15) was founded on the belief that computer vision, in all of its forms, should be accessible to all, and that there is immense potential to be unlocked by bridging the gap between bits and atoms. For the first 4 years, I operated as the company's COO, owning Operations, Sales, CS, BD, People Ops, Legal, and a significant portion of Product. For the last ~2 years, I operated as the company's CEO, owning functionally the same roles, plus investor relations.
We started building a workflow for capturing 2D and 3D data and automatically designing and manufacturing custom-fit products (Water Leg and Design Studio). We built a verticalized solution for the prosthetics, orthotics, and bracing industry, and eventually sold that product to Össur, the second largest player in the space. I personally negotiated and managed the sourcing and execution of the multi-million dollar asset purchase and transition services agreements.
With the funding from the APA and the retention of the IP rights, we transitioned those vertical tools into use-case agnostic ones and built up a portfolio of customers using our end-to-end tools - edge SDKs, data APIs, web platform for data organization, labeling, and model training - that make it easy for any engineer to design, test, run and scale computer vision ML applications (Capture and Serra). During the 2 years we built and scaled Serra and Capture, I managed early user and product testing and eventually grew and managed our customer base, including multiple six-figure- (and one multimillion dollar-) computer vision machine learning services and licensing contracts. As of Dec 2020, Capture had been downloaded more than 515k times, users have taken more than 3.5M scans, and over 3,500 developers had signed up to download our SDK. At the end of the company's run, I stewarded Standard Cyborg through an acquisition process, diligence, and definitive docs.
